Teaching and Learning in St Bede’s

Teaching and Learning at St Bede’s

At St Bede’s, our mission as a Catholic school is to help every young person become the very best version of themselves—intellectually, morally and spiritually. This commitment shapes everything we do in the classroom. Our approach to teaching and learning is grounded in compassion, high expectations and evidence-based practice, ensuring that each student receives the very best education every single day.

We believe that great teaching transforms lives. That is why St Bede’s places Quality First Teaching at the heart of our provision. Every lesson is designed to be inclusive, ambitious and adaptive to students’ needs, ensuring that all learners – regardless of background or starting point – can thrive.

An Evidence-Informed Approach

Our teaching practices are informed by the latest research on what makes learning effective. The St Bede’s Lesson Toolkit provides all staff with clear, shared expectations for high-quality classroom practice, supporting consistency across the school. The Toolkit acts as both a professional resource and a self-reflection tool, enabling staff to continually refine and strengthen their craft.

The Lesson Toolkit highlights key components of excellent teaching, including positive classroom climate; responsive planning; clear explanations and modelling; active supervision; rigorous questioning techniques such as cold calling, use of mini-whiteboards and turn and talk; and high standards of student work. These features reflect our belief that all students are entitled to excellent teaching, every lesson, every day.

Promoting Oracy and Confident Communication through Turn and Talk

As a Catholic community, we recognise the importance of giving every student the confidence to express themselves with clarity, respect and purpose. Developing oracy is a core strand of our teaching and learning approach. Staff routinely use a structured talk strategy – turn and talk – to help students articulate their thinking, rehearse ideas and deepen understanding.

Our Commitment to Reading Across the Curriculum

At St Bede’s, developing reading ability is a moral, academic and spiritual priority. We believe that reading opens doors: to knowledge, opportunity, empathy and lifelong success. Because of this, reading is woven into all aspects of teaching and learning. We promote reading through tutor time reading, targeted intervention for students who require support, and high-quality reading within the curriculum.

A Catholic Vision for Excellence

At St Bede’s, teaching and learning is more than a set of classroom strategies – it is an expression of our faith. We teach with love, fairness and ambition because we believe that every child is made in the image of God and blessed with unique potential. Our classrooms are places where students are known, valued and challenged; where effort is celebrated; and where curiosity, resilience and compassion are cultivated daily through our school values. Through high-quality teaching, nurturing relationships and a shared commitment to excellence, we aim to support our students in becoming not only successful learners, but also thoughtful, caring and responsible young people. We want our students to be the best versions of themselves in every respect, and we promote a culture excellence in all that we do.
