Catholic Social Teaching in Action
Our place of worship.
At the heart of Catholic Social Teaching is the profound belief in the dignity and equality of every human person. Every individual is lovingly and beautifully made in the image and likeness of God. Because of this, every person is of infinite value and deserves to be treated with respect, compassion, and justice. All the other principles of Catholic Social Teaching flow from this truth.
When we recognise the divine image in others, we are called to respond with love and mercy – caring for those in need, protecting the vulnerable, and being stewards of creation. CST offers us a framework for making decisions about how we live, how we treat others, and how we work towards a more just and compassionate world, both locally and globally.
Living out Catholic Social Teaching at St Bede’s
At St Bede’s, we are committed to putting Catholic Social Teaching into action every day. Our school community actively seeks to live out the values of the Gospel through service, charity, and justice.
A key inspiration for our work is the Parable of the Sheep and the Goats from Matthew 25:31-46. In this teaching, Jesus describes how people will be judged at the end of time, based on how they cared for others:
“For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.” (Matthew 25:35–36)
From this parable, we learn about the Corporal Works of Mercy—practical ways we can express our faith by helping others. These acts are more than charitable deeds; they are opportunities to grow in faith, imitate Christ, and show the world the love of God in action. As Jesus reminds us in Matthew 9:13:
“I desire mercy, not sacrifice.”
Year-by-Year Acts of Mercy
At St Bede’s, each year group adopts one of the Corporal Works of Mercy as a focus for their service and social action. Through fundraising, awareness campaigns, and
partnership with chosen charities, students develop a deep and personal understanding of how faith calls us to care for others:

Each student, as they journey through school life at St Bede’s, participates in a growing commitment to others. This journey not only strengthens their understanding of Catholic Social Teaching but also nurtures a spirit of empathy, justice, and faith in action.
Together, as a school rooted in Gospel values, we aim to follow Christ’s command to love our neighbour and transform our world—one act of mercy at a time.
